Moving can be a daunting and overwhelming task, but with careful planning and organization, it can be made much easier. We have compiled a comprehensive checklist to help you navigate the last weeks before moving to ensure a smooth transition to your new home. Let’s dive in and make your moving experience as stress-free as possible!
MOVING HOUSE CHECKLIST
THE LAST WEEKS BEFORE MOVING:
- Confirm all dates, times and locations with your removal company
- Acquire packing materials – boxes, tape, labels, markers, newspaper & bubble wrap
- Hold a garage sale, donate, sell or throw out unnecessary items
- Identify which of your items will need special care during the move
- List any dangerous goods to be moved (ammunition, petrol, chemicals etc) and advise your removalists
- Securely pack all jewellery, money and insurance documents
- Set aside special items you will need during the move to take with you
- Pack each room – leave all items sealed and ready to be moved
- Organise labels for each family member and give the removalist a floor plan showing which room each family member will occupy –this will ensure unpacking is a little quicker and easier
- Label fragile items carefully to avoid breakages
- Be at the new home before the removalist/s to help them get started
- Organise care for any children on moving day
- Think about any pets and how you will manage them during the move
CANCEL THE FOLLOWING THINGS AND RE-ORGANISE THEM AT YOUR NEW HOME:
- Newspaper deliveries
- Telephone, internet and Foxtel
- Gas and electricity
- Redirect mail to your new address and remember as letters arrive to advise all contacts of your new address
NOTIFY YOUR CHANGE OF ADDRESS TO:
- Bank and credit institutions
- Electoral roll
- Registrar of motor vehicles and drivers licence
- Insurance companies
- Magazine or any other subscriptions
- Employer
- Doctor, dentist and all health professionals
- School/University
PLEASE REMEMBER:
- Thorough ‘exit’ cleaning including:
- Steam clean carpets
- Clean surfaces, both inside and outside of cupboards
- Leave a sparkling clean oven
- Clean windows
- Tidy the garden – freshly mowed and trimmed, remove rubbish
- Ensure vacant possession is given – the new owner doesn’t want your items left in the garage or anywhere else
- Lights should all be in working condition, dead globes should be replaced
- Leave photocopies of any house plans, sewer and drain plans, ETSA approvals for building work
- A list for the purchaser including information such as when the bins are collected, recycling collected and green rubbish
- Instructions for household equipment and inclusions (air conditioners, ovens etc.)
- Allow more time than you think you need to pack, as it always takes longer than you expect
- Say goodbye to the neighbours!
